Tanvir Mokammel was born in 1955 at Khulna in what was then known as East Pakistan, which subsequently became Bangladesh. His process of growing up got intermixed with the evolving landmarks of his country's history-like the communal riots, the Pakistani rule,the emerging Bengali nationalism, the War of Liberation, the role of the Communist Party, the movement for alternative cinema, mass education, the future of Bengali nationhood and various other issues. All these have been brilliantly reflected not only in his films, but also in his writings and other intellectual activities.
 
This process of his creativity has been competently analysed by the internationally acclaimed film writer, John Hood in his facile style.
